每當談起法國的視覺藝術，我首先想起的並非巴黎羅浮宮裡的收藏品，而是距今約已有二至三萬年的拉斯高和庫沙克巖畫，以及展示在諾曼底拜約的繡畫。
只要論及拜約繡畫的長寬幅度(230英尺×20英尺)，其實已足以令人咋舌，尤其畫中內容之豐富，一直讓人目不暇給。
拜約的繡畫是「編織的歷史」，因為它的載體屬於亞麻的織線。儘管它並非真正的編織，而是一針一線刺繡而成的；現存典藏的拜約繡畫，最後三米遺失不見了，於是留給後人一段既是缺憾，又是無限遐思的空間。
拜約的繡畫自從問世後，並沒有公開展示，少有人親眼目睹過。也許如此，它才能幸運地既未遭受日曬雨淋、蟲蛀破壞，也沒有被兵燹戰火摧毀殆盡。
主修歷史、擁有藝術史博士學位、以及熟稔古埃及文物的戈茲，「編寫」了一本小說「女考古學家：消失的織錦與皇室陰謀」。
它的場景發生在1997年間，那一年英國王妃黛安娜意外發生車禍死亡。她的身份本來已經足夠成為國際上各報紙的頭條新聞，加上她與埃及情夫的戀情、與英國王室之間的恩恩怨怨等，更使得這則新聞沸騰，各種八卦充斥媒體。
這部小說的作者本著個人的專業知識，結合當前的時事、兩世紀以來歐陸與英國在埃及或海峽之間的恩仇、再加上公元11世紀時一場王位繼承戰爭，寫成一部懸疑重重的小說。
這本書以拜約繡畫最後三米遺失的一段為故事的起點，營造了古今宮廷文化中的種種內幕。那一段遺失的「完結篇」，如同一段「歷史的留白」，提供了戈茲創作的無限空間，這好比基督徒遺失的聖盃，也給後人提供了不少「畫題」及「話題」。
戈茲的小說人物設定在當代，可見這本書並非習慣上所謂的「歷史小說」；但毫無疑問地，它是一本「古今連線」的作品。戈茲的寫作好比拜約繡畫的織工一般，一針又一針，密密綿綿地，把古今許多事情「編織」起來。
